Effective self-employed business owners, entrepreneurs and solo professionals are always on the lookout for good people.  What will determine whether the people you want are the people you get?

Whether you are starting your own business or running a small business the people you get are determined by one thing.  It is determined by “Who” you are.

If you have recruited and hired a staff, you will probably find that you and the people who follow you share common ground in several key areas.

Basic Premise About People You Attract

Who you are is who you attract.  Grow accordingly.  As a self-employed business owner seeking small business growth and small business success the first place to look is at yourself.

Your personal development will determine the quality of your people, the quality of your business and the quality of your life.  Take a look at yourself.  After all, you are the leader of your business.  Or, if you don’t have a business you are the leader of your life.  Who you are is who you attract.

Characteristics of People You Attract

Since who you are determines a large extent who you attract let’s take a look at some of the characteristics that you will find in the people who work with you.

  • Attitude—People with good attitudes tend to make people around them feel more positive.  Terrible attitudes bring down others.  Who are you attracting?
  • Values—Whether shared values are positive or negative, the character you possess is what you will likely find in the people who follow you.
  • Background—People attract—and are attracted to—others of similar background.  This natural magnetism is so strong that organizations that value diversity have to fight against it.  There is strength in diversity.  It is the foundation for small business growth.  Who are you attracting?

Intangibles of People You Attract

  • Energy—It’s a good thing that people with similar levels of energy are attracted to one another.  If you are a low energy owner and need high energy people this can be a difficult challenge.  Again, who are you attracting?
  • Giftedness—I like this one a lot.  People are attracted to talent and excellence and are most likely to respect and follow one who possesses their kind of talent.  Are you attracting gifted people?  As a small business coach I can assure you that when you position yourself in your business to use your gifts and talents that you are more likely to attract gifted people.
  • Leadership Ability—Who you are is what you attract.  The leaders you attract will be similar in style and ability to you.

All of the above points have an influence on the people you attract to your business.  And, in some businesses they will also determine the quality of your client or customer.  As a business owner it is your duty to yourself and those you are leading to invest in your personal development.
