Attitude and Small Business Success: The Connection

I was at a small business seminar several years ago when the speaker in talking about attitude stated that “attitude is everything.”  Whether we agree with that statement or not, I believe we would agree that attitude is extremely important in terms of the success, happiness and fulfillment you will receive in life.

Have you ever had one of those days, weeks or months in running your small business where things just don’t seem to fit together?  Most of us have because most small businesses will have their ups and downs.  In fact these ups and downs are normal and are part of the process of small business success.

More often than not you can’t control what is going to come your way in business.  Small business growth and success in large part is about our attitude when the unexpected comes our way.

How do you handle the unexpected?  And, if you have too much of the unexpected it is fair to ask the following question.  How good is my preparation?  There is a direct relationship between preparedness and the impact the unexpected can have on you and your business.

For small business success to regularly come your way you must have an attitude of preparedness.  Are your books in order?  Do you have a marketing business plan?  If so, are you persistent in executing it?  Do you have policies and procedures that bring consistency to your business, employees and customers?  Most successful small businesses would answer yes to these questions.

If you aren’t thinking success in these areas start right now to get an attitude of preparedness.  Preparedness is about something more.  It is about commitment to small business success.

Too often we confuse involvement with commitment.  Are you flying stand by?  If you are then you are involved in hopefully getting to your destination on time?  Or did you purchase a full fare ticket?  That’s a commitment to get to your destination.

Have an attitude of preparedness.  When you do you will be making the commitment necessary to build small business success.  Remember that at least ninety percent of the time we are not hurt by what happens to us, but by our opinion of what happens to us.

With preparedness and commitment and when the unexpected happens your opinion of what is happening to you won’t be as severe. The result will be that you will be able to gain the momentum more quickly toward the success you desire.

What are your thoughts on attitude and small business success?
