Startup Business Plan: You Are The Captain Of Your Own Ship

Startup Business PlanOne of the critical keys to success in starting your own business is to have a workable and realistic startup business plan.  Very often the new business owner will draw on his experiences from the past.

Creating A Successful Startup Business Plan

Where good, positive and successful experience can be helpful and incorporated into a startup business plan, I see another aspect about it that can hold back the prospective self-employed entrepreneur or solo professional.

What can hold you back in your startup business plan by incorporating successful, past experience?  As a personal business coach the true success of a startup business plan is not about the past.  It is about creating the present and future you desire.

Whether it is success planning, a marketing business plan or creating small business marketing strategies, they are all about success in the present and the future.

Creating A Successful Startup Business Plan–The Past

The past should be used as a school to formulate your startup business plan and nothing more.  Too often, the would be self-employed business owner fails because his startup business plan takes a template from the past that worked and tries to incorporate it into a present situation where it doesn’t fit.

How often do you see a successful business in one industry buy another successful business in the same industry?  It happens quite often.  Yet, many of these acquisitions end up being unsuccessful.

What happened?  There are many answers but the biggest one is that the acquiring company takes their template for past success and applies it to the new company.  Yet, there is a different culture, market considerations and marketing business plan, to name a few, that enabled the company that is being acquired to be successful.

Creating A Successful Startup Business Plan–The Present And The Future

Many of these success factors are put to the side in creating a new present and future.  The result, very often, is failure.

When you are creating your own business, have a startup business plan that draws on the lessons from the past but allows for you, the business owner, to create a present and future for small business success.

Very often the small business owner comes from a successful operation at a larger company.  This larger company has a template for business success based on its current size.  The self-employed business owner needs to create his own, unique template in his startup business plan that accounts for the fact, that in most instances, he does not have the resources, personnel, structure and marketing to successfully operate on the template of the larger company.

I know you are saying that this is just common sense.  But as a personal business coach I have seen the prospective business owner take this route to failure.  Coaching success is about the present and the future and not the past.  A good startup business plan also focuses more on the present and future than the past.
